IT’s Concern with iPad in Health Care
According to a recent survey of healthcare IT professionals, there are a number of significant issues with using the iPad in a healthcare setting. As consumer-facing computing devices, such as the iPad, enter the healthcare market, healthcare marketing organizations that are looking to extend their share of the marketplace, especially in EMR and healthcare app development, need to be aware of these concerns shared by established IT professionals in the field.
The survey, presented in a whitepaper by Panasonic, revealed a number of concerns of healthcare IT executives in regards to consumer-grade devices, like the iPad. The bulk of those concerns came in four categories: governance, risk and security management, data collection and device ruggedness.
Highlights from the survey include:
- 66 percent of respondents believe that consumer-grade tablets create governance issues, namely the ability to comply with industry and cross-sector requirements regarding privacy and personal information. Respondents noted that current governance policies aren't covered by current guidelines, and these new technologies require frowned-upon "workarounds."
- 66 percent of respondents said the "consumerization of IT" is complicating their organization's ability to securely manage vital information resources. A key concern is the inability to engage in real-time identity management and role-based access control.
- 74 percent of respondents believe consumer-grade tablets present challenges for data entry. Due to unconventional input technologies, these devices leave little flexibility in data entry. Respondents noted the ability for devices to recognize handwriting, accept keyboard entry, record dictation, incorporate speech-to-text conversion and scan labels would be ideal capabilities for any enterprise computing device.
- 94 percent of respondents believe durability and ruggedness are important requirements in hospital and clinical settings. Respondents noted that these technologies are not suited for the high-traffic, high-touch environment of the hospital setting. In addition, they noted concerns about the ability of the iPad and other tablets to be chemically sanitized hundreds of times daily.
Even amid these concerns, the prevalence of iPad and other tablet computing solutions in the healthcare setting is on the rise. As doctors and patients require greater integration of these technologies into the healthcare delivery process, healthcare marketers, including app developers, electronic medical records companies and other healthcare IT services, would do well to work solutions to IT concerns about these technologies into their product offerings. As gatekeepers to the IT framework of hospitals and clinics, their signoff will be imperative for any company hoping to get their hardware/software into the hands of tomorrow's Doctors and patients.
